Census of Local Units of Employment 2019

Enterprises and employed persons

At the reference date 31 October 2019 there are 694 829 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 704 720 persons, 4 089 704 thereof being employees. Among these enterprises 660 065 are enterprises with only one local unit of employment, where about the half of all employees are working. Enterprises with more than one local unit of employment (5.0%) employ nearly 48% of all employed persons.

For the reference date 31 October 2019, quality improvement measures relating to the raw data were implemented.

Sole proprietorship

For 31 October 2019 382 810 Austrian enterprises are led by one person and have no other person employed. This is more than half of all Austrian enterprises. Three out of five enterprises with sole proprietorship are managed by men. Only in the economic domains „Human health and social work activities“ and „Other service activities“ male sole proprietorships are a minority (17.7% respectively 22.4%).

At the reference date 31 October 2018 there are 686 027 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 638 134 persons, 4 031 929 thereof being employees. Among these enterprises 649 265 are enterprises with only one local unit of employment, where about the half of all employees are working. Enterprises with more than one local unit of employment (5.4%) employ nearly 47% of all employed persons.

For the reference date 31 October 2018, a change in the definition of persons commuting from abroad takes effect. Thus there is a significant increase in this category (+24 291 or +11.9% compared with the old definition). Now even persons without any information on an existing main residence abroad are counted as commuters from abroad if the variables sex, age and country of citizenship are known.

For 31 October 2018 374 147 Austrian enterprises are led by one person and have no other person employed. This is more than half of all Austrian enterprises. Three out of five enterprises with sole proprietorship are managed by men. Only in the economic domains „Human health and social work activities“ and „Other service activities“ male sole proprietorships are a minority (17.4% respectively 22.3%).

Enterprises and employed persons

At the reference date 31 October 2017 there are 665 447 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 521 650 persons, 3 932 256 thereof being employees.

Comparing the results for the reference date 31 October 2017 with the results from 2016 there is a significant rise in the number of enterprises and local units. This is due to better raw data for persons who work as 24 hours care. Those persons mainly work self-employed so they can be found as separate enterprises. 2017 there are 32 587 enterprises with one self-employed and no unemployed person in the economic domain of “Other social work activities without accommodation n.e.c.” (ÖNACE 88.99-0) –this is an increase of 1 608.8% compared to 2016. 28 026 of those enterprises are managed by a person with only a secondary residence in Austria. Thus the number of commuters from abroad increases from 2016 to 2017 as well.

For 31 October 2017 355 239 Austrian enterprises are led by one person and have no other person employed. This is more than half of all Austrian enterprises. Three out of five enterprises with sole proprietorship are managed by men. Only in the economic domains „Human health and social work activities“ and „Other service activities“ male sole proprietorships are a minority (18.9% respectively 21.1%).

At the reference date 31 October 2016 there are 624 418 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 398 908 persons, 3 847 094 thereof being employees.

Census of Local Units of Employment 2015

At the reference date 31 October 2015 there are 620 471 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 336 952 persons, 3 784 482 thereof being employees.

Census of Local Units of Employment 2014

At the reference date 31 October 2014 there are 629 898 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 299 547 persons, 3 731 515 thereof being employees.

Census of Local Units of Employment 2013

At the reference date 31 October 2013 there are 616 521 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 266 021 persons, 3 705 824 thereof being employees.

Census of Local Units of Employment 2012

At the reference date 31 October 2012 there are 620 523 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 224 286 persons, 3 673 999 thereof being employees.

Compared to the census of local units of employment 2011, the following changes apply:

• Due to methodological changes regarding the concepts of the census of local units of employment 2012 there are some changes regarding the allocation of local units in specific NACEs: Starting 2012 all local units of an enterprise which is controlled by a public sector unit (according to ESA) are affiliated to the controlling unit.

Census of Local Units of Employment 2011

In the course of the Register-based Census for the year 2011 the local units are object of the count for the first time since 2001. Due to available data from administrative sources (companies register, tax authority, social security, Austrian Economic Chamber, agriculture and forestry register and associations register) enterprises and their local units can be determined without having to contact the enterprises. All enterprises of the profit-oriented sector are ascertained, as well as non-profit organisations and units from the public authorities. The census of local units of employment 2011 determines for the first time ever units from the agricultural sector and forestry.

Due to the usage of the administrative sources enterprises from “agriculture and forestry” and “public administration” can be determined for the first time. This, and the fact, that small and midget enterprises are captured by using the administrative data must thus be taken into account, when comparing the quantity of enterprises and their persons employed in the year of 2001 with those figures from 2011.

At the reference date 31 October 2011 there are 622 591 enterprises in Austria. They employ a total of 4 167 164 persons, 3 615 352 thereof being employees.
