Vienna, 2021-06-25 – In 2020, total imports amounted to €144.42 bn and total exports added up to €142.57 bn, according to final results by Statistics Austria. Compared to 2019, Austrian imports decreased by 8.5% and Austrian exports declined by 7.1%. The balance of trade thus showed a deficit of €1.85 bn. Working-day adjusted, the rates of decrease were 8.8% for imports and 7.5% for exports.

Since 2011 total imports and since 2015 also total exports exceeded €130 bn; the mark of €150 bn has been exceeded in both trade flows 2018 as well as 2019. 2020 showed significant declines, however, total imports and total exports amounted clearly over €140 bn. The decline in the months April (imports: -25.9%, exports: -23.7%) and May (imports: -24.6%, exports: -25.4%), which were the first months particularly coined by corona-related restrictions, significantly contributed to the negative development of the reporting year as a whole. A general flattening of exports as well as imports was already seen in January and February 2020. The last two months 2020 showed slight increases: November (imports: +1.3%, exports: +3.3%) and December (imports: +2.1%, exports: +3.3%).
