The statistical product „Trade by Enterprise Characteristics” (TEC) provides an additional point of view on companies which are engaged in foreign trade. A number of different indicators are available for enterprises which are responsible for the Austrian cross-border trade:
This statistics is based on the obligatory Eurostat data linkage “Trade by Enterprise Characteristics”. It is compiled according to the EU-concept and is produced annually by all EU member states. In order to describe the structure and characteristics of trading enterprises, the Austrian international trade in goods statistics (ITGS) is linked on microdata level with the register of statistical units (business register) and the Foreign Affiliates Statistics (FATS). Unlike the compilation of the EU-TEC statistics, the data linkage of this output follows the national concept and is therefore based on the same principle as the Austrian ITGS-data.
As the linkage is performed on microdata level, the VAT-codes of the underlying enterprises have to be both valid and successfully matched with the business register. Consequently, the reference population (population 8) does differ from the final total ITGS-data of the respective reference year published by Statistics Austria. This difference includes among others enterprises without a valid VAT-code or trade by enterprises where no connection to the business register could be established.
Data for Trade by Enterprise Characteristics is available for the years 2008 to 2019.
Remark: As of the reporting year 2018, the statistics
“Trade by Enterprise Characteristics” by national concept no longer
uses the legal unit, but the statistical unit as the underlying unit
for compilation. This change is implemented together with the EU-wide
harmonized statistics “Trade by Enterprise Characteristics” by EU-concept
and is based on an EU recommendation. When comparing data with previous
reporting years (2008
