In the 1980s and 1990s, the number of marriages averaged 45 000 per annum. Following the post-war low recorded in 2001 (34 213), on average some 37 000 marriages were concluded annually during the 2000s until 2014. Since 2015 marriages of people with a main residence in Austria concluded abroad are also included in Austrian marriage statistics. The annual average number of marriages thus rose to 45 200 again. In 2020 the number of marriages was 39 662, a decrease by 13.8% compared to last year's results. Since 1 January 2019, marriage is also recognized for same-sex couples. Consequently, 612 same-sex marriages were forged as well as 56 conversions of registered partnerships into marriages.
The median age for first-time marriages rose between the early 1990s and 2019 from 26.5 years to 33.3 years for men and from 24.3 years to 31.0 years for women.
