Private households: All persons living in a housing unit as their main residence form a private household (household-dwelling-concept). Institutional households: Establishments that are used for the accommodation and care of a group of persons – normally over the longer term. Homeless persons: Persons with a residence confirmation which enables them to prove residency.
According to the results of the Register-based Labour Market Statistics (reference date: 31 October 2019), there are 3 955 761 private households in Austria. Based on the population in private households (8 753 667), the average size of a private household is 2.21 persons. 135 271 persons live in 3 393 institutional households and further 5 442 persons are registered homeless persons.

The distribution of the private households by size clearly shows the trend towards small households. The 1 487 592 persons living on their own, make up 37.6% of all households. In 30.4% of all private households there are two persons, in 14.5% there are three, in 11.3% there are four persons. In only 6.2% of all households in Austria five or more persons are living together.

According to the final results of the Register-based Census held on 31 October 2011, there are 3 649 309 private households in Austria. Based on the population in private households (8 276 628), the average size of a household is 2.27 persons. 116 594 persons live in 3 171 institutional households and further 5 811 persons are registered homeless persons.
